Continuous increase in Swedish natural gas for vehicles in 2014

January 27, 2015. Sales of compressed natural gas (CNG) increased in 2014 over eight percent compared to the previous year. More than 123.000 tons of gaseous fuel, corresponding to approximately 1.6 TWh were sold at 200 filling stations operating in the country.

Biogas represented over 1 TWh and, therefore, more than 50 percent of the total supply of vehicles. This is because most of the Swedish cars are prepared to run on biogas.

The NGV contributed to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by about 128.000 tons, which represents about 110.000 vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel, and also provided an important contribution to improving urban air quality.

While the forecasts show that the sale of vehicles continues to increase, the lack of response from the government on policy instruments that expire at the end of the year, it could jeopardize the growth of the market, according to Anders Mathiasson, Managing Director of Energigas Sweden.

The tax exemption for biogas expires at the end of 2015 and the reduction in the tax on commercial gas vehicles will conclude in late 2016. Both instruments are crucial for the market to continue to grow, according to industry.

In late 2014 circulated about 50.000 natural gas vehicles on Swedish roads.
